The day before we were to leave Hawaii, we drove to the town of Kailua-Kona one afternoon to visit a quiltshop, that I had read about online, only to find that it had recently moved to Waimea, which was over an hour away. Due to the lateness of the hour, we knew there would not be enough time to make it there before it closed. I was highly disappointed to say the least!
Right after we turned to go home, I was expressing my sadness about not being able to visit the one place I had been so excited about. All of a sudden I just happen to look up....and there....out of no where....on the top floor of this building was a sign that read....
Was I excited? Oh, yes!!!
I thought...this has to be... meant to be!
When I entered the store I saw two people standing
in front of me, musing over several drawers of fabric
heaped upon the counter.
The gal was Karen Barry, the owner of the shop, and her friend John. John had just walked in with drawers full of old fabric that he had used over ten years ago to make his minature designed quilts. He had brought them to the store to see if Karen was interested in any of the fabric that he had left. She invited me to have a look to see if there was anything I wanted to take home with me. Fun!
Had I come at the right time or what? I hurriedly picked
out a few pieces that I knew would go well in my collection.
I think I was on a bit of a red and blue kick that day.
Among the fabric, there were some old
vintage lace doilies that had been in John's family
for years that he felt like he wanted to part with.
I definitely had come at the right time!!!
Aren't they sweet?
I suppose that you must know how I was feeling
right about now if you had read my previous post.
Vintage anything makes me happy,
especially darling doilies!
This was the largest doilie of the bunch.
It actually is more ecru in color than is shown here.
There is only problem with nice old doilies
and that is that they often come with a few light stains.
I finally stopped drooling long enough
to get some pitures of the inside of the shop
and the unique quilts that were hung all around.
I will now take you on a virtual tour of.....
"Quilt Passions"!
This quilt has a Hawaiian greeting on it that means,
"Welcome, come inside, the house is yours".
I fell in love with this block.
The fabric they chose was absolutely wonderful !
Karen stocks a lot of really gorgeous fabrics,
perfect for making all of these beautiful quilts
that you are about to see!
In addition to the quilts, there were several wall
hangings and some great seasonal quilts on display.
What a fun, different look Hawaiian fabric gives
to a dresdan plate table runner and placemat.
It seems like everywhere I looked there were quilts!
I was so impressed by the cuteness of this shop,
but most of all, I was even more impressed by Karen.
She is the sweetest person that you'll ever meet.
Her cute friend has come to take a class and
have Karen help her with her great quilt blocks.
I really enjoyed seeing the different fabrics
that they used and their great style of quilting.
Don't you just love her quilt block clock?
That reminds me... it is time for me to go.
I hope you have had a good time,
and I haven't worn you out with my tour of
"Ouilt Passions", my new favorite stop in Hawaii!

You took lots of wonderful pictures and I just about felt like I was right there with you. I know you must have had a great time visiting with Karen and John.
Hello Rae ann, thank you for your kind thoughts...I enjoyed your post about Quilt Passions..my DH has a saying if it is meant to be it is meant to be....loved your choice of blues and reads....old doyleys are my weakness as well...Warm Regards Lyn
WOW...did I ever love those photos!!! (I happen to have the pattern for the quilt that looks like it's a strip of film...but never did anything with it yet.) That looks like a shop you (and many of us) would want to visit many times, but...highly unlikely with its location. *sigh*
What a find. I can see why you loved the place so much. They really had a lot to see.
OMG!!! These photos were better than a bowl full of candy! They are all stunning!
You did arrive at just the right time. I have a lot of vintage doilies that were stained and I soak them in Oxy*clean, rinse well and then hang out in the sun. It works great.
Thanks Needled Mom for the tip on Oxy*clean. Can't wait to try it!
Rae Ann, I'm back in town and would like to talk to you about quilt guild. It is this Tuesday. Call me, we are in the phone book.

Wow! This looks like a great quilt shop! It looks like you got some fun fabrics too -- I especially like the one that looks like a red Dear Jane print.
Hi Rae Ann...
thanks for the virtual tour. First off, you know I LOVE the doilies and what luck to show up just in time!
I truly adore the pink and white quilt at the top of the photo roll. I think it's so beautiful and the pink turtle at the bottom is so cute....I must be on a pink kick right now....as usual!
Happy everything,
x

Oh my gosh, certainly a different take in quilting. Very islandish. Nice and different.
